TRENTON, NJ — The City of Trenton has imposed an emergency weekend curfew for businesses along part of East State Street following a series of violent late-night incidents that city officials say have threatened public safety.
Under Executive Order 26-001, signed by Mayor W. Reed Gusciora, businesses located on East State Street between West Canal Street and South Broad Street must close each weekend from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., beginning Friday evening and continuing until Monday morning. The order takes effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
According to the mayor, the decision follows a pattern of violence during late-night weekend hours in the area, including shootings, fights, traffic congestion, illegal parking, open drug and alcohol use, and other public safety concerns. City officials say the emergency measure is intended to protect residents and restore order.
In addition to the curfew, the city plans to increase police patrols, strengthen overnight parking enforcement around City Hall, expand cleanup operations, and pursue amendments to local ordinances that would give law enforcement additional tools to address disruptive behavior.
Not everyone supports the move. Ed Forchion, owner of NJWeedman’s Joint, criticized the order during a City Council meeting, arguing that he has repeatedly requested more police patrols instead of business restrictions. He warned that the curfew could hurt legitimate businesses while simply shifting crowds to neighboring communities.
City officials say they will continue monitoring conditions and determine whether the emergency order should remain in effect in the coming weeks.
