Newark police are searching for four men accused of carrying out a home invasion while posing as FBI agents in the city’s Ironbound section.
The robbery happened at about 2:30 p.m. on August 27 at a third-floor apartment on Mott Street near Raymond Boulevard, according to Newark public safety officials. Three men entered the building, knocked on the woman’s door and allegedly told her they were federal agents.
When the woman opened the door, police say the men rushed inside and pushed her onto a couch. One suspect allegedly held her down while the other two searched the apartment.
The suspects allegedly stole $7,500 from a bedroom safe and two credit cards from the victim’s purse.
Police say the three men then left the building and got into a black Toyota Camry Solara with out-of-state license plates, where a fourth suspect was waiting. The vehicle was last seen heading east on Fleming Avenue. Investigators are also examining whether a shuttle bus photographed in connection with the case may have played a role.
Newark police have released surveillance images and are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or has information to contact the department’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).
