NEW JERSEY — Governor Mikie Sherrill is signing legislation aimed at strengthening protections for patients and health care providers in New Jersey, while using a live address on social media to frame the move as a response to growing federal pressure on reproductive and gender-affirming health care.
At the time of publication, Sherrill was speaking live on her official social media accounts under the banner “Shielding New Jersey Patients & Providers.” In the livestream, she discussed abortion access, protections for transgender patients, Medicaid and broader access to health care, while criticizing actions taken by the Trump administration.
The legislation at the center of the event is S2260/A2218, a broad package designed to strengthen New Jersey’s protections for people seeking and providing reproductive and gender-affirming health care that is legal in the state. The measure passed both chambers of the Legislature earlier this summer.
The bill expands protections for both patients and providers and defines “legally protected health care activity” to include reproductive health services and gender-affirming care that are lawful in New Jersey. It also creates a new crime of interfering with reproductive or gender-affirming health services, including intentionally blocking access to facilities, threatening or intimidating patients or providers, or damaging property because of the care being provided.
The legislation also strengthens protections around assisted reproductive technology, including IVF. It states that individuals in New Jersey have a fundamental right to choose whether to use assisted reproductive technology and provides that a fertilized egg, embryo or fetus does not have independent rights under New Jersey law.
Another provision is aimed at preventing miscarriages or fetal complications from automatically triggering certain medical-legal investigations. The bill also repeals older state statutes dealing with partial-birth abortion restrictions and parental notification requirements for minors seeking abortion, provisions that had already been affected by court decisions or superseded by newer law.
Sherrill’s remarks also placed the new law in a broader national context. New Jersey has already positioned itself as a state seeking to preserve reproductive health access and gender-affirming care, and Sherrill joined the Reproductive Freedom Alliance earlier this year. Her administration has also proposed major state investments in family planning and reproductive health access.
The governor also spoke about federal changes affecting Medicaid and health coverage. New Jersey has warned that federal changes signed into law by President Trump will alter NJ FamilyCare eligibility rules beginning in fall 2026, creating additional uncertainty for some residents who rely on public health coverage.
For Sherrill, the message of Thursday’s event was clear: New Jersey intends to use state law to protect patients and medical professionals when the care they receive or provide is legal within the state.
And unlike many policy announcements that arrive first as a press release, this one was unfolding in real time.
As this article was being written, the governor was still live on social media, speaking directly to New Jersey residents while signing the legislation and defending the state’s approach to abortion access, transgender health care and patient protections.
