Schools in Hardyston Township, Sussex County, are closed Tuesday after mold was discovered in several areas of Hardyston Elementary School.
Superintendent Jarlyn Veras said air-quality and mold testing initially detected airborne mold spores in two office spaces. During a broader remediation effort, mold was then found in additional locations throughout the elementary school building.
Both the elementary and middle schools are closed Tuesday while district officials determine how to proceed.
The problem could disrupt classes for weeks. District officials say elementary students may need to remain out of their building for several weeks while remediation work continues. The current plan is to temporarily move elementary students into the middle school.
The district said there is no evidence of mold at the middle school. Testing at the elementary school had been ordered after reports of an odor and high humidity in two office areas.
Officials said the health and safety of students and staff remains the district’s top priority.
