Hackensack Public Schools is investigating a cybersecurity breach after a phishing email allowed unauthorized access to portions of the district’s computer and data systems, school officials confirmed.
According to the district, the incident began in late June when an employee responded to a phishing email. The unauthorized access was discovered on July 28, prompting the district to immediately launch an investigation with the assistance of outside cybersecurity experts and notify law enforcement authorities.
District officials said the investigation is ongoing and they are working to determine exactly what information may have been accessed. At this time, there is no evidence that personal information belonging to students or staff has been misused or that identity theft has occurred. However, officials are continuing their forensic review and will notify affected individuals if the investigation determines that sensitive information was compromised.
The school district has also implemented additional security measures designed to strengthen its network and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
Cybersecurity experts note that phishing attacks remain one of the most common methods used by hackers to gain unauthorized access to computer systems. These attacks typically rely on deceptive emails that appear legitimate in an attempt to trick recipients into revealing credentials or opening malicious links or attachments.
