On October 12, 2026, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill acknowledged both Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day in two separate social media posts.

In her first message, Sherrill honored Indigenous communities whose history in New Jersey extends far beyond the state’s founding. She emphasized that their cultures and traditions continue to enrich New Jersey and that preserving their stories is an important part of recognizing the state’s history.

In a second message, the governor recognized Columbus Day by celebrating generations of Italian Americans who helped shape New Jersey. She highlighted their lasting contributions to neighborhoods and communities throughout the Garden State.

By recognizing both occasions, Sherrill acknowledged two distinct aspects of New Jersey’s history: the enduring heritage of Indigenous peoples and the contributions of Italian-American immigrants.

Her messages also reflected a central theme of the broader Columbus Day discussion: recognizing one community’s history does not necessarily mean overlooking another’s.

But the story of Columbus extends even further, connecting Indigenous peoples, Italian-American heritage, European expansion, and the often-overlooked historical and scientific influence of the Muslim world.
