EDISON, New Jersey — After weeks of political turmoil, heated public meetings and a partial municipal shutdown, the Edison Township Council has approved the 2026 municipal budget in a 6-1 vote.
The budget presented by Mayor Sam Joshi passed without amendments, bringing an end to a dispute that had divided township leaders and frustrated residents. The prolonged budget battle previously led to a partial government shutdown, the furlough of hundreds of municipal employees and disruptions to several public services, including municipal court operations.
Monday night’s meeting drew a large crowd, with many residents criticizing both the budget process and township spending. Some questioned the lack of transparency, while others urged officials to put the political conflict behind them and focus on serving the community.
Council members acknowledged that the township must avoid a repeat of this year’s budget crisis. Mayor Sam Joshi rejected claims that the budget had been introduced too late, saying discussions with the council had been underway for months.
With the budget now approved, township officials say municipal operations can move forward without further furloughs or service disruptions, closing one of the most contentious budget battles Edison has faced in recent years.
