Four people, including three children and a teacher, were killed Thursday afternoon in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A 16-year-old gunman was fatally shot by an armed bystander who intervened before police arrived.
The victims included children ages 5, 8, and 11. Two others—a 7-year-old student and another teacher—were critically injured and transported to a hospital.
How the Attack Unfolded
Police received the first emergency call at approximately 12:59 p.m., reporting that someone had fired shots at a vehicle outside the school.
Within moments, additional calls reported that an armed individual had entered the building and opened fire.
Authorities said the teenager entered the school after shooting through locked doors.
Police officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m., only minutes after the initial emergency call.
Armed Citizen Intervenes
According to police, a community member pursued the attacker into the school and shot him, ending the attack before officers reached the gunman.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised the citizen who intervened.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including the suspect’s motive and possible connection to the school.
Community in Mourning
Silver Rail Elementary School serves approximately 450 students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
The shooting has devastated the community of Bend, a city of approximately 100,000 residents in central Oregon.
As families mourn the victims, the tragedy has renewed concerns about school security, gun violence, and the protection of children in American classrooms.
This is a developing story.
