Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final was overshadowed by scenes that did not belong in such a historic sporting moment. Instead of being remembered only for Spain’s championship triumph, the closing moments of the match drew attention because of incidents that erupted immediately after the final whistle.
Following the end of the game, a heated confrontation broke out between players from Argentina and Spain, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Argentine players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina were at the center of the incident.
Paredes was shown a straight red card for his actions after the match. Video footage appears to show him grabbing Eric García by the neck before moving toward Gavi, further increasing tensions between the players.
Footage also showed Molina appearing to swing toward one of the Spanish players who were seated on the bench, adding to the chaotic scenes after the final whistle.
The incident was also addressed by former England international Alan Shearer, who criticized the behavior of some Argentine players.
“Paredes punched someone in the face two or three times. He simply charged at them. There is no place for that kind of behavior in sport. We understand how much this meant to them and how painful a defeat can be, but you have to know how to lose. We have seen this from Argentina too many times. Their reaction after the match was terrible,” Shearer said.
Spain celebrated a historic World Cup triumph with a deserved victory, but the final moments of the match will also be remembered for the unsporting scenes that overshadowed what should have been a celebration of football and respect.
