A powerful thunderstorm may have left its mark on a Summit neighborhood Thursday evening, after residents say lightning struck the chimney of a multi-apartment home and sparked a fire in the attic.
The fire broke out Thursday evening in Summit, New Jersey, as thunderstorms moved through the area. Residents told ABC7 Eyewitness News that they believe lightning struck the building’s chimney at around 6:20 p.m., sending bricks flying and igniting a fire in the attic.
Firefighters responded to the home and worked to contain the flames, which were concentrated in the attic area. The incident displaced residents from the building, but authorities reported no injuries.
Residents described a sudden and powerful impact. The apparent strike damaged the chimney, and the force of the event was felt inside the building as the storm passed through the area.
Despite the dramatic scene, everyone was able to get out safely.
Fire officials said the official cause remains under investigation, so while residents believe lightning triggered the blaze, investigators have not yet formally confirmed that conclusion.
The incident came during a round of thunderstorms that moved through parts of New Jersey Thursday, providing another reminder of how quickly severe summer weather can turn dangerous.
