An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 cargo jet overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, crossed beyond the airport perimeter, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire.
The aircraft, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, shortly before 2 p.m. It was operated by cargo carrier 21 Air for Amazon.
Authorities said the plane went off the runway near Northwest 42nd Avenue before hitting vehicles and erupting in flames. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene.
At least five people were killed and five others were injured, including three reported in critical condition. Emergency crews also worked to reach people trapped in vehicles and inside the aircraft.
The crash caused major disruption at Miami International Airport, with runways and taxiways temporarily closed and incoming flights diverted.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
