BALTIMORE — An American Airlines flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted after a 67-year-old passenger allegedly became violent, forcing other passengers and crew members to restrain him with zip ties and duct tape.
The incident happened aboard American Airlines Flight 618, which was traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport.
According to witnesses, the passenger, identified as Arthur Lundeen of Arizona, became disruptive about two hours into the flight. He allegedly began shouting offensive remarks, verbally abusing passengers and crew members, and then became physically aggressive.
Witnesses told CBS News that Lundeen attacked the passenger seated next to him and allegedly put his hands around the man’s neck.
Passengers Help Restrain Him
Several passengers stepped in to help the flight crew control the situation.
During the struggle, one passenger who assisted reportedly said Lundeen bit him on the arm.
The group eventually restrained Lundeen using plastic zip ties and duct tape, securing him to his seat so he could no longer move around the cabin or continue the disturbance.
Video and photos from the flight showed the passenger strapped into his seat while other travelers remained nearby.
Flight Diverted to Baltimore
Because of the incident, the pilots diverted the aircraft to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Police boarded the plane after landing and took Lundeen into custody.
The flight later continued to Newark after the situation was resolved.
FBI Investigating
The FBI is investigating the incident, as disruptive or violent behavior aboard a commercial aircraft can potentially lead to federal charges.
Authorities have not yet announced the final charges in the case.
The incident is another example of how serious in-flight disturbances can quickly become a safety issue for passengers, crew
members and the aircraft itself.
