A new community initiative is making babywearing education and support more accessible to families across northern New Jersey. The North Jersey Baby Carrier Library offers parents a chance to learn about babywearing, try different carriers with professional guidance and, as the collection grows, eventually borrow carriers before deciding what works best for their family.
NORTH JERSEY — Choosing a baby carrier may sound simple until a parent actually starts looking. Wraps, ring slings, structured carriers and dozens of different brands can quickly turn a seemingly easy purchase into an overwhelming decision.
A new North Jersey community initiative wants to take some of that guesswork away.
The North Jersey Baby Carrier Library was created to give families access to babywearing education, hands-on experience with different carriers and support in finding an option that fits both the parent and the baby.
The initiative was founded by Ali Infante and plans to hold monthly babywearing meetups in partnership with Our Birthing Center in Pompton Plains.
Try Before You Buy
One of the main ideas behind the project is simple: the carrier that works perfectly for one family may not be comfortable or practical for another.
At the meetups, parents and caregivers can learn about different styles, compare options and receive personalized fit support from certified babywearing educators. Families can also meet other local parents and try carriers rather than relying only on product descriptions or online reviews.
As the library’s collection expands, organizers plan to introduce a lending program that will allow families to borrow carriers and try them at home before deciding what works best for them.
What’s Already in the Library?
The North Jersey Baby Carrier Library is already building its collection.
Carriers currently available to try include Hope & Plum Lark, Ergobaby Embrace, Ergobaby Adapt, Ergobaby Omni 360, Tula Free-to-Grow, Tushbaby, Boba Wrap and Infantino.
Additional demonstration carriers provided by certified babywearing educators include LennyLamb Lennylight, Didymos ring slings, Girasol Meh-dai, woven wraps, LennyLamb Onbuhimo Pro and Beluga Baby Stretchy Wrap.
Some of these demonstration carriers are available to try during meetups but are not part of the library’s permanent lending collection.
More Than a Collection of Baby Carriers
The project is designed to be more than simply a place to borrow equipment.
Its mission is to make babywearing education and support more accessible while creating a welcoming community for local families.
Monthly meetups will provide certified babywearing education and fit checks, opportunities to try different carriers and a chance for parents and caregivers to connect with one another.
The goal, according to information provided by the library, is to help every family find a carrier that works for their body, their baby and their lifestyle.
How It Works
The program is being developed in stages.
Families can first attend a meetup, meet other parents, learn about babywearing and try different carrier styles with the help of a certified educator.
The next step is finding the right fit by comparing different options and receiving personalized support.
And as the collection grows, the library plans to add another important feature: borrowing before buying. Families will eventually be able to take carriers home and see how they work in everyday life before making a purchase.
The Library Is Still Growing
Because the North Jersey Baby Carrier Library is a growing community project, organizers are also inviting local families and community partners to help expand the program.
People can support the initiative by donating baby carriers their families have outgrown, volunteering at meetups, connecting the library with community partners, spreading the word or contributing toward additional carriers and educational resources.
The library is currently looking to expand its collection with ring slings, soft structured carriers, woven wraps and toddler carriers.
A Resource for North Jersey Families
For new parents, the number of baby products on the market can be overwhelming — and baby carriers can be particularly difficult to choose without actually trying them.
The North Jersey Baby Carrier Library offers a different approach: learn first, try different options, receive guidance and eventually borrow before buying.
It also turns what is usually an individual shopping decision into an opportunity for families to meet and support one another.
The monthly meetups are being organized in partnership with Our Birthing Center in Pompton Plains, with babywearing educators available to provide guidance and fit support.
