A black bear was spotted near an elementary school in Hillsdale, Bergen County, on Sunday evening, prompting local police to issue a public safety advisory.
According to the Hillsdale Police Department, the bear was last seen in the area of Ann Blanche Smith School on Hillsdale Avenue. Residents living nearby were advised to remain indoors whenever possible and to avoid approaching or follow the animal. Animal control officials were notified and responded to the area.
Police also urged parents to keep children and pets indoors until the situation is resolved. Black bears are the largest land mammals in New Jersey and are commonly seen throughout the state, particularly while searching for food. Wildlife officials remind residents to secure garbage containers, avoid leaving pet food or bird feeders outdoors, and never attempt to feed or approach a wild bear.

There are an estimated 3,000 to 3,500 black bears living in New Jersey, with most found in the northern and northwestern parts of the state. While bear encounters are relatively common, authorities stress that residents should keep a safe distance and immediately report any sightings in populated areas.
