What if finding out whether your body is burning fat was as simple as taking a single breath?
A new handheld device aims to do exactly that. Instead of requiring blood tests or laboratory analysis, it measures compounds in your breath to determine when your body switches from burning carbohydrates to burning fat for energy.
How the Device Reads Your Metabolism
The technology analyzes the amount of acetone in exhaled breath. Acetone is naturally produced when the body begins breaking down fat and using it as its primary fuel source.
In other words, the device can detect when the body enters ketosis—a metabolic state in which fat, rather than carbohydrates, becomes the main source of energy.
According to a study published in the scientific journal Device, the prototype produced results that closely matched traditional laboratory testing during trials involving 12 participants.
A Breath Test Instead of Blood Tests?
While many smartwatches and body composition scales estimate body fat percentage, very few devices can reveal what is happening inside the body’s metabolism in real time.
Researchers have long been interested in identifying the exact moment when the body begins burning fat. Until now, that has typically required measuring ketones in the blood or acetone in the breath under carefully controlled laboratory conditions, where factors such as humidity and breathing patterns can be monitored.
The new device is designed to bring that level of precision into everyday life.
Designed for Home Use
Led by researcher Andreas Ginter, the development team created a system that removes excess moisture and impurities from exhaled air before taking a measurement, improving the accuracy of the results.
The device also works with a companion smartphone app that guides users through the breathing process. It can detect whether a person is breathing too forcefully or too lightly and adjusts the sampling process to help ensure more reliable readings.
The technology is currently being developed under the name Nutrion, with the goal of making metabolic monitoring simple enough for everyday home use.
Potential Benefits Beyond Weight Loss
Researchers believe the device could have applications far beyond dieting.
It may help people better understand how their nutrition affects metabolism, assist athletes in optimizing training and recovery, and support doctors in monitoring treatments related to weight management and metabolic health.
Although the technology is still in development and requires further testing on a larger number of participants, scientists believe it could represent an important step toward non-invasive health monitoring.
If future studies confirm its effectiveness, monitoring metabolism may one day require nothing more than a single breath.
