President Donald Trump suggested renaming the state of New Mexico “New America” in a Truth Social post on Sunday, sharing an image that crossed out the word “Mexico” and replaced it with “America.”
In the post, Trump wrote that “many people” had suggested the change and described “New America” as a more prestigious and attractive name for the state. He also repeated an unsupported claim that New Mexico is one of the country’s major “vote cheating” states.
The visual accompanying the post showed a map of the United States with “Mexico” crossed out in the state’s name and “America” inserted in its place. The official White House account on X later reposted the image, drawing additional attention to the proposal.
Trump has not signed an executive order changing the name of New Mexico, and there has been no formal announcement of a legal process to rename the state. Reports that he had already issued such an order originated from a satirical post and were later debunked.
The suggestion quickly drew criticism from New Mexico officials. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state’s name “isn’t up for debate,” while members of the state’s congressional delegation also rejected the idea and emphasized New Mexico’s history and cultural identity.
The post follows other recent Trump efforts involving geographic names. His administration previously changed the federal designation of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and, more recently, moved to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America for federal use.
For now, New Mexico remains New Mexico. Trump’s Sunday post represents a public suggestion rather than an official change to the state’s name.
