Two people were killed and nine others were wounded after gunfire erupted early Sunday morning in Trenton, New Jersey, according to police.
Officers responded at approximately 12:25 a.m. on August 30 to the area near 194 Locust Street after receiving reports of multiple shots fired. When police arrived, they found numerous people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities confirmed that 11 people were shot in total. Two victims were pronounced dead, while nine others were taken for medical treatment, including at Capital Health Regional Medical Center. Their conditions have not yet been publicly released.
Police have not released the identities of the victims.
Investigators also have not yet confirmed what led to the shooting. Some local reports indicate that a gathering or possible neighborhood cookout had been taking place in the area, but officials have not publicly established that as the cause or setting of the violence.
Nearly 40 evidence markers were reportedly visible at the scene as investigators worked through the morning. A vehicle with visible damage was also removed from the area near the hospital.
As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been announced and no suspect information had been released.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation along with Trenton police.
The shooting remains an active investigation, and authorities are expected to release additional information as victims are identified and detectives determine what led to the gunfire.
