Bayonne’s run at the Little League World Series hit its first major setback Sunday, but New Jersey’s team is still alive in the tournament.
Bayonne, representing the Metro Region, fell 6–0 to Davenport, Iowa, on Sunday, August 23, at the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Iowa pitcher Anthony Johnson Jr. delivered a dominant performance, striking out 15 batters and keeping Bayonne off the scoreboard throughout the game. He also helped his team offensively, hitting a three-run home run in the sixth inning that widened Iowa’s lead.
The loss was Bayonne’s first of the tournament, but under the Little League World Series double-elimination format, it does not mean the end of the road.
Bayonne now moves into the elimination bracket, where every game becomes a must-win.
The New Jersey team is scheduled to return to the field on Tuesday, August 25, when it will face the winner of the Southwest–Great Lakes matchup.
For Bayonne’s young players, the dream of advancing at the Little League World Series is still very much alive.
