Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has reportedly become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The milestone was reported Wednesday by DiscussingFilm, marking another major box-office record for Nolan’s epic.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” had held the record since 2024 with approximately $1.338 billion worldwide, becoming the first R-rated film to reach that level. “The Odyssey” has now moved past that mark as its global run continues.
The achievement is especially notable because R-rated films traditionally face a smaller potential audience than PG-13 blockbusters. Despite that restriction, “The Odyssey” has developed into one of the biggest theatrical events of 2026.
The film had already crossed $1.1 billion worldwide by August 9, becoming the biggest movie of Nolan’s career at that point. Variety reported that the total included about $461 million from North America and $643 million from international markets.
Its momentum continued through August. AP reported this week that “The Odyssey” remained strong at the box office, while other current estimates placed its worldwide total above $1.2 billion before its latest gains.
The new record also means Nolan now occupies two major positions in the history of R-rated box office hits. His 2023 film “Oppenheimer” remains one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies ever, while “The Odyssey” has now moved to the very top of the list.
For years, the billion-dollar club was dominated largely by superhero films, sequels, animated franchises and family-friendly blockbusters. “The Odyssey” reaching the top of the R-rated category adds another chapter to a year in which several major releases have pushed global theatrical revenues higher.
And with the film still playing internationally, its final worldwide total has not yet been settled.
For now, however, the record has changed hands:
“The Odyssey” has overtaken “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the biggest R-rated box-office hit ever.
