HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — What seemed like an unfortunate accident for a New Jersey family two years ago may now become one of the most significant scientific discoveries in recent years.
Scientists from NASA and the SETI Institute have released the results of their analysis of the meteorite that crashed through the roof of a family home in Hillsborough on July 16, 2024, leaving a hole in the ceiling of a bedroom and scattering black fragments across the bed and floor.
A Time Capsule From the Early Solar System
Detailed analysis revealed that the rock is an exceptionally rare CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorite, more than 4.5 billion years old. Researchers describe it as a “time capsule” from the earliest days of our solar system.
Inside the meteorite, scientists identified:
- Rare amino acids
- Carbon-rich organic compounds
- Evidence of ancient salty water
- Molecules considered fundamental building blocks of life
One of the most remarkable findings is that many of the detected amino acids are extremely rare—or absent—in life on Earth, leading researchers to conclude that they are truly extraterrestrial in origin.
Why Is This Meteorite So Important?
Most meteorites are exposed to rain, moisture, and bacteria before scientists are able to recover them. In this case, however, the homeowner carefully collected the fragments immediately using gloves and clean containers, preserving the sample in an almost pristine condition.
That allowed researchers to study its original chemical composition with minimal contamination from Earth’s environment.
A Clue to the Origins of Life?
Scientists believe meteorites like this one could help answer one of science’s greatest questions: how the basic ingredients necessary for life reached the young Earth billions of years ago.
By studying both its composition and trajectory, researchers believe the meteorite originated from a primitive asteroid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where salty water once existed.
While the discovery does not prove that life originated in space, it strengthens the idea that meteorites may have delivered essential organic compounds that helped create the conditions for life to emerge on Earth.
