An unusual sighting of pink-colored dolphins near Qantab Beach in Muscat, Oman, has captured widespread attention on social media. Videos showing the pale marine mammals swimming alongside darker dolphins have sparked curiosity about their remarkable appearance and the science behind their unusual coloring.

The footage, which circulated widely in October 2026, shows dolphins surfacing in the clear waters off Oman’s coastline.

The striking contrast between their light-colored bodies and the surrounding blue water has attracted interest from wildlife enthusiasts and marine observers worldwide.

What Makes These Dolphins Pink?

Although most dolphins are commonly associated with shades of gray, some species can develop much lighter skin, sometimes appearing pink or almost white.

One possible explanation involves blood vessels close to the skin’s surface, which can produce a pinkish appearance.

Age, natural pigmentation, and changes in skin coloration can also influence how dolphins look.

However, researchers have not confirmed the exact reason for the coloring of the dolphins seen in the Oman footage.

Which Species Were Spotted?

Some social media reports suggest that the animals may be Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, a group known for developing pinkish coloration in certain populations.

However, marine observers have also raised the possibility that the animals could be Risso’s dolphins, which may become much lighter as they age.

An Omani newspaper, Al-Shabiba, published a commentary questioning the identification and warning that some circulating videos appeared to contain additional footage of other dolphin species.

As a result, the exact species of the animals in the original sighting remains uncertain.

Oman’s Rich Marine Wildlife

Oman’s coastline provides important habitats for a wide range of marine species, including several types of dolphins and whales.

The waters surrounding Muscat and the Gulf of Oman are known for marine biodiversity, making the region an attractive destination for wildlife observation.

Dolphins are frequently seen in Omani waters, although individuals with such distinctive coloration are much less commonly reported.

Viral Video Sparks Worldwide Interest

The video has spread across international social media platforms, drawing attention far beyond Oman.

For many viewers, the unusual appearance of the dolphins has been a reminder of the remarkable diversity found in the world’s oceans.

While the footage continues to attract attention, experts caution that identifying marine animals from short video clips can be difficult, particularly when lighting and water reflections affect their appearance.

The sighting offers a fascinating glimpse of marine life, even as the dolphins’ exact identity remains a subject of discussion.
