Health insurance premiums in New Jersey’s individual market will increase by an average of 19.8% in 2027, according to final rate data released by the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

The increase will affect residents who buy their own health coverage rather than receiving insurance through an employer.

Among the insurers participating in the state’s individual market, UnitedHealthcare will see the largest average increase, with rates rising 35.7%. Oscar follows with a 29.3% increase, while Ambetter from WellCare of New Jersey will increase by 20.8%.

AmeriHealth’s average increase will be 17%, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey will raise rates by an average of 15.3%.

Premium Increases Vary by Insurer

Although the statewide average increase is 19.8%, the impact on consumers will depend on the insurer, the specific plan selected, age, location, and household income.

Many residents who buy insurance through Get Covered New Jersey may still qualify for state and federal financial assistance, which can reduce the amount they pay each month.

Open Enrollment Starts November 1

Open Enrollment for 2027 health coverage in New Jersey begins on November 1, 2026, and runs through January 31, 2027.

State officials encourage residents to compare available plans carefully during the enrollment period, especially as premiums rise across the market.

The rate changes highlight continuing affordability concerns for individuals and families who do not receive employer-sponsored coverage and must purchase insurance on their own.
