KATHMANDU, Nepal — A powerful flash flood struck central Nepal early Sunday, sweeping away homes, destroying bridges, and forcing residents to evacuate as emergency teams launched rescue operations.

At least five people have been reported missing, while 49 others have been rescued, according to authorities.

The disaster occurred in the Gorkha district, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Kathmandu, after a landslide reportedly blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, triggering a sudden surge of water downstream.

Dozens of Homes Destroyed

Local officials estimate that between 35 and 40 houses were swept away or severely damaged in several communities along the river.

The flood also destroyed multiple bridges, including suspension bridges used by residents to travel between remote mountain villages.

Infrastructure at a hydroelectric construction project was damaged, while electricity and communication services were disrupted in affected areas.

Videos and photographs circulating online show powerful torrents of muddy water carrying debris through settlements and destroying structures along the riverbanks.

Rescue Teams Search for Missing Residents

Nepal’s army, police, and disaster response teams have been deployed to the affected region.

Military helicopters have assisted with evacuations, transporting stranded residents to safer locations.

Authorities have issued emergency warnings to communities downstream, including areas in Gorkha, Dhading, Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi.

Residents living close to the river have been urged to move to higher ground as officials continue monitoring water levels.

Landslide May Have Triggered the Disaster

Preliminary reports suggest that a landslide temporarily blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, allowing water to accumulate behind a natural barrier.

When the obstruction gave way, a powerful surge of water, mud, and debris rushed downstream.

Officials are investigating the precise circumstances of the flood.

Nepal Faces Another Natural Disaster

The latest flooding comes as Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods earlier this year that caused extensive destruction and displaced thousands of people.

The country’s mountainous terrain makes many communities particularly vulnerable to landslides, sudden river surges, and flash flooding.

Although no deaths have been confirmed in the latest disaster, authorities warn that the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, and further evacuations may be necessary if river conditions worsen.
