Several of the world’s most widely used artificial intelligence services experienced significant disruptions Thursday morning, with ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all reporting problems at roughly the same time.
The outages began developing around 10:30 to 11 a.m. ET on September 3, according to service-status reports and user complaints. The unusual overlap quickly drew attention because the three platforms are operated by separate companies — OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI.
OpenAI reported elevated errors affecting ChatGPT and Codex, with users experiencing problems across functions including logins, search, voice mode, deep research, image generation and file uploads. The company said mitigation efforts were underway.
Anthropic’s Claude also experienced service problems beginning around the same period. Multiple Claude models were initially affected, though the scope of the disruption later narrowed as the company worked to restore service.
The disruption at Grok was particularly broad. xAI’s official status page listed outages affecting Grok on the web, iOS, Android and X, along with several U.S. API regions.
What caused the simultaneous outages remains unclear.
Because three major AI platforms experienced problems at nearly the same time, speculation quickly emerged about whether they might share a common infrastructure provider or whether a broader internet-service problem was involved. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that one Cloudflare outage caused all three services to fail, and the companies have not announced that the incidents are connected.
Simultaneous outages of this scale are relatively unusual and highlight how quickly disruptions to major AI platforms can affect millions of people who increasingly rely on them for work, research, coding and everyday tasks.
The situation is still developing, and the companies are continuing efforts to restore normal service.
