The U.S. Mint has released a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The coins officially went on sale September 2 and are also being released into circulation. They feature Trump’s portrait on the front, along with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.” The reverse displays the Presidential Seal, the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR,” and the number 250 in recognition of the nation’s semiquincentennial.
The portrait was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and was inspired by an official White House photograph taken by Daniel Torok.
Despite their gold-colored appearance, the coins do not contain gold. They are made primarily of copper, with zinc, manganese and nickel.
The U.S. Mint is selling the coins in collector rolls and bags. A 25-coin roll costs $61, while a 100-coin bag costs $154.50. For the first 24 hours of sales, purchases are limited to two of each product per household.
Collectors may also find a much more limited version. The Mint says 250,000 of the Trump $1 coins were struck on July 4 at the Philadelphia Mint with a special “July 4th” privy mark. Those coins have been randomly mixed into the rolls and bags being sold by the Mint.
The coin is unusual because it features a sitting U.S. president. Federal law generally restricts the appearance of living presidents on U.S. currency, but the Trump administration has argued that the special authority Congress gave the Treasury Department for coins commemorating America’s 250th anniversary permits this design. The decision has therefore attracted attention not only from collectors but also over its historical and legal significance.
The Trump dollar is part of a broader series of special coins being issued in 2026 to commemorate 250 years since the founding of the United States.
